Monday was a very sad day for fans of the CW’s hit series, The Vampire Diaries.
First, the show’s star, Nina Dobrev, announced the shocking news that she would be exiting the series after six seasons. “I’ve just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries,” Dobrev wrote on Instagram.
“I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime,” she wrote.
As if that wasnt enough sad news for one day, it was also announced on Monday that Michael Trevino — who plays fan favorite Tyler Lockwood on the hit show — will also be departing as a series regular at the end of the season.
“Michael has been a beloved member of the Vampire Diaries family since Day 1,” showrunner Julie Plec said via a statement. “Even though he’s also going to be out in the world exploring new opportunities, we look forward to finding creative ways to make sure he and his character Tyler Lockwood always remain a part of the show.”
By “new opportunities,” Plec is likely referring to Trevino’s new ABC pilot The Kingmakers, a drama which centers on a young man whose sister is found dead during her freshman year at an elite Ivy League university.
The Vampire Diaries has already been renewed for a seventh season.
